Dipole Formation at Interfaces of Alkanethiolate Self-assembled Monolayers and Ag(111)

چکیده
The formation of interface dipoles in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of –CH3 and –CF3 terminated short-chain alkanethiolates on Ag(111) is studied by means of density functional theory calculations. The interface dipoles are characterized by monitoring the change in the surface work function upon adsorption of the SAM. We compare results obtained for SAMs in structures with a different packing density of molecules, i.e. ( √ 7× √ 7)R19.1◦, ( √ 3× √ 3)R30◦, and p(2×2). The work function of alkanethiolate SAMs on silver depends weakly on the packing density; that of fluorinated alkanethiolates shows a stronger dependance. The results are analyzed in terms of two nearly independent contributions to the interface dipole. These originate respectively from the molecular dipoles and from a charge transfer between the metal surface and the molecules. The charge transfer is determined by the silver–sulfur bond and it is independent of the electronegativity of the molecules.

Nanoscale observation of dissociative adsorption during self-assembly processes of dialkyl disulfides on Au(111)
The formation of striped phases of dialkyl disulfides on Au(111) and graphite has been monitored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM imaging clearly exhibits the formation of striped phases having corrugation periodicities that are nearly consistent with the molecular length of alkanethiolate moieties formed after the S-S bond cleavage of dialkyl disulfide on a gold surface. This is the...

First-principles calculations were employed to elucidate the origin of adsorption-induced surface stresses in alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers on an Au(111) surface. Our results suggest a mechanism that accounts for the huge relief of the tensile stress compared to the bare surface in terms of a local rearrangement of surface Au atoms accompanying charge removal from the surface towards...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Phase Diagram of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanethiolates on Gold
Alkanethiolate monolayers on gold are important both for applications in nanoscience as well as fundamental studies of adsorption and self-assembly at metal surfaces. While considerable experimental effort has been put into understanding the phase diagram of these systems, theoretical work based on density functional theory (DFT) has long been hampered by the inability of conventional exchange-...
متن کاملPatterned crystallisation on self-assembled monolayers with integrated regions of disorder†
This paper describes the engineering of patterned calcite films using templating by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) supported on micropatterned mixed metal substrates. The substrates were prepared by deposition of one metal (Au, Ag) onto the surface of another metal (Au, Ag) through a stencil or photoresist masks. The micropatterning arises from the generation of disordered regions in SAMs at ...

The current state of understanding of the structure of the metal/thiolate interface of n-alkylthiolate 'self-assembled monolayers' (SAMs) on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) is reviewed. On Cu(111) and Ag(111) there is now clear evidence that adsorbate-induced reconstruction of the outermost metal layer occurs to a less atomically-dense structure, with the S head-group atom bonded to four-fold and ...
